The Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a massive trade agreement that is threatening to change a lot about how people are watched online. Regardless of whether you are doing anything illegal whatsoever the TPP has many far-reaching implications for anyone who is online (which let’s be honest, is everyone).

Thanks to Wikileaks, we now know that the TPP will force internet service providers to essentially police their networks. This includes secretly handing over your identity and information to law enforcement. While aimed at skirting piracy, in reality the TPP deal increases surveillance in a massive way.

While the TPP has not been fully ratified yet, it is only a matter of time before it, or something like it puts pressure on internet service providers to comply with it’s overreaching copyright laws.

How to protect your privacy online via VPN from the Trans Pacific Partnership

We’re all for trade liberalization that benefits citizens, but when it encroaches on individual privacy it is time to take some precautions. The best thing you can do as of right now is to encrypt your internet connection via a virtual private network (VPN). This will essentially reroute your internet traffic through an intermediary and make it virtually impossible to track your actions online.

Our favourite service that keeps your information completely anonymous (even from the method of payment you use) is Private Internet Access.  They don’t keep any logs on their servers of their customers so there is literally no paper trail of anyone who uses the internet while on their VPN. I have used it for over a year and can’t recommend it enough. It’s fast, reliable and they take privacy very seriously, which with the TPP coming is a very good thing.

Excited to watch your favourite NFL team take it to the Patriots? Well, it’s not just the balls that are deflating… It is super deflating to see that local blackouts online make it impossible to watch your favourite local team.

How to access NFL Game Pass without blackouts

Luckily there is a simple and reliable solution to local blackouts on NFL Game Pass. A VPN, or virtual private network. The general idea is that you connect to this service when you want services like NFL Game Pass to think you live in the US (or pretty much anywhere else in the world). You just select a region outside of the blackout area and you’re good to go!

Obviously the first step is to be subscribed to NFL Game Pass, so do that first. It’s an awesome service and I encourage you all to pay for it.

Which VPN should I choose?

Le tme skip the formalities. Private Internet Access is far and away the best VPN on the market for the price. They don’t keep any logs and have a stellar reputation and good customer service. The service is also quite fast. I rarely see any drop in speed when using the service.

Avoid NFL blackouts now

How do I get started?

To get up and running head on over to the Private Internet Access VPN website here. Click the big “Get Started Now” button to start your setup.

How to get American Netflix in Canada with a VPN

Probably the best value is going for the one year plan, which works out to $3.33 a month. And believe me, it is well worth the price of admission. You’ll get access to all of this extra online content from around the world, but also be secure in knowing that your identity is protected online. So if you like torrenting (if you’re into that kind of thing), Private Internet Access can give you a bit of piece of mind.

Private Internet Access works on pretty much any device you own (Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone, iPad) and is pretty foolproof to use.  It’s simply an app that you open up, select the server you want to use and then click connect! So if I want to access UK Netflix, I can connect to a server in the UK. Same for Japan, the US, Canada etc.

How do I use the Private Internet Access App?

This is the super easy part. Once you sign up for the service they will send you both your login info as well as a link to go download their app for your different devices. For Android you’ll see the PIA app on Google Play and for iOS you’ll see it on the App Store.  I use both Windows PCs and Macs at home and both work the exact same way.  When you want to mask your location, simply open up the app. When it first starts you’ll see a little man icon appear in your taskbar (Windows) or the top menu bar (Mac). He will be red, meaning that you are currently NOT connected to any Private Internet Access servers.

*There have been some reports online that the Android and iOS app requires GPS on the device to be on in order to use the service. This makes PC’s and Mac’s the preferred platform for using a VPN for MLB games.

Private Internet Access icon - How to get American Netflix in Canada with a VPN

On Windows, right click on this little icon and then you’ll see a long list of the different possible servers to connect to. I recommend finding one that that is closest to your actual location. So if I am in Alberta, Canada I may want to choose the “US Midwest” server since it is relatively close geographically. So click on “Connect US Midwest” and the little red man will slowly turn into a little green man. Once he is a bright green colour then you are good to go. Netflix and Hulu will now think you live somewhere in the US Midwest and will grant you access to this content.

Wrap-up

Private Internet Access will get the job done. It is one of the fastest VPN’s on the market and has been confirmed to work very well with NFL Game Pass for bypassing local blackouts. Give it a try.

Avoid NBA blackouts now Buy VPN

Please note that I do get a small commission if you click on the links above (at no cost to you). I have used Private Internet Access for over a year now and absolutely love their service and would not be promoting it if I wasn’t totally happy with it.  If you have any questions please do send me an email.

Do you have someone on your gift list that is a techie?  A dork? A gear junkie? Well, it’s that time of year when I sit down and recommend some of the best gifts for TV and movie lovers this year. This list will be focused specifically on gear that enhances the TV and movie watching experience as well as a few picks of just great stuff I have used this year. So without further ado, here is the list!

Gift Guide – Best gifts for TV and movie lovers 2015

Xbox One - Buy Now on Amazon 1. Xbox One Holiday Bundle

It’s really becoming the go-to piece of gear for many cord cutters and TV/movie watchers. If you’re a gamer and also a Netflix addict then look no further. Also, Microsoft is offering some amazing deals on bundles this holiday (including one with Fallout 4 – get ready to kiss 100+ hours of your life away). Seriously though, I love my Xbox One and it is my main streaming box for Netflix, Plex, NHL Gamecenter etc.

Roku 4 - Buy now on Amazon 2. Roku 4 streaming video box

This one is a bit of surprise. I never was a huge fan of Roku boxes in the past.  But this year they killed it. One of the most versatile boxes on the market has been made even better with the addition of true 4K video support. Check this one out if you are in the market for a stand-alone streaming media box.  It kicks some serious ass.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 - Buy it now on Amazon 3. Microsoft Surface Pro 4

I haven’t gotten around to doing a full review on this sucker yet, but for my money it is probably the best tech release this year. Period. It’s not only a slim and capable tablet, but with the added type cover, this is truly the all in one device that can finally replace your laptop. I’ve had mine for almost 2 months now and it is an amazing piece of gear. If you know someone who needs a new laptop, consider the Surface Pro 4.

Western Digital 4TB External Hard Drive - Buy it on Amazon 4. Western Digital 4TB external hard drive

What are you going to do with all of your digital movies? Well, external drives are now 4 terabytes!  Meaning that you can safely plug this guy into your streaming server or Xbox One and enjoy almost limitless storage (not quite, but it’s about as close as you can get right now).  And right now Amazon is running a sweet deal on this guy.

Chromecast 2 5. Google Chromecast 2

How do you follow-up on a smash hit streaming device?  Well, you make it better. This year’s refresh of the Chromecast offers a much nicer form factor, speedier innards and finally support for your blazing fact Wireless AC router and 5Ghz band. And it’s only $35!  If you don’t one (or a couple) of these then you are really missing out on the best deal in consumer electronics.  Period. See my review here.

Nexus 6P - Buy it on Amazon 6. Nexus 6P smartphone

For when your loved one is wanting to watch some Netflix or surf the web on the go. I’m a huge fan of the Nexus brand of smartphones from Google. This year Huawei has really upped the build quality on probably the best Android phone on the market. It’s unlocked too, so you can take it to any phone provider and just slap in a SIM card.

Moto 360 - Buy it on Amazon 7. Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch

This second edition version of my favourite smartwatch does not disappoint. It was the first out of the gate with a round-faced smartwatch last year. And this year they have amped up the speed of the innards for an even smoother Android Wear experience. The software side from Google has also been beefed up since the first edition and it really is a great experience now.

NVIDIA Shield TV - Buy it on Amazon 8. NVIDIA Shield TV Android TV box

This is my vote for the best overall streaming box launched this year. It is fast, capable and comes with a kickass gaming controller. This is what Android TV should be, and right now you can’t find a better Android TV box. Nothing comes even close to the NVIDIA Shield TV’s quality and speed.

Vizio E Series LED TV - Buy it on Amazon 9. VIZIO E Series 50 inch LED TV

If you know someone who REALLY needs a great new TV, but don’t want to break the bank, this where you want to start looking. VIZIO has been turning heads this year with the best sub-$500 line of TVs this year. They really are a great deal. And for image quality snobs, they have gotten some really great objective reviews this year too. I like the 50″ but they come in sizes going all the way down to 24 inches.

DLink AC1900 router - Buy it on Amazon 10. DLink AC1900 router

What good is all of this great new connected equipment if you don’t have a great router to actually handle all of your web traffic? This is a huge seller on Amazon. Mainly because it is reasonably priced and features dual band and wireless AC. There are certainly better routers on the market, but nothing close to the mix of quality and affordability that the AC1900 brings.

I hope this list helps you wade through the confusing world of consumer electronics this year. I’m a big dork so feel free to send me an email if you have any questions.  Happy Holidays!

The other day I had a hankering to watch Key and Peele get “Prepared for Terries” and to “Draxx them Sklountz.” If you know at all what the hell I am talking about, then you are a Key and Peele fan. To my surprise, early last month almost all of the previously viewable Key and Peele content is now geo-blocked outside the US. For a show that has benefited so much from online viewing, this is bad news.

But I have a solution.  Actually, two solutions that will give you access to all of this Key and Peele content once again.

How to watch Key and Peele in Canada

Method #1:  Using UnblockUs

The first tool is what is sometimes called a SmartDNS service or DNS masker. It basically fools specific sites into thinking that you are located somewhere else (like the US). I’ve been using UnblockUs for several years now due to its ease of use and really great customer service. It works on pretty much every device you could imagine (PC, Mac, game consoles, streaming boxes) and is also really cheap. At $4.99 a month, it will also unlock additional Netflix regions for you (of course if you already have a Netflix account).

I have made a simple tutorial video on how to get started below:

Start your free trial on UnblockUs

Method#2:  Using Private Internet Access (VPN)

The second method is also really simple. But it is possibly even more flexible. Not only will it fool specific services like Netflix and Hulu, but it will for intents and purposes make your whole computer look like it is located somewhere else. This is using a technology called a “virtual private network” or VPN.

The service that I use (and trust) is called Private Internet Access. It works well and, just like UnblockUs, works on almost all devices. It’s actually even cheaper at about $3.99 a month in Canada. And you will be able to completely bypass any geoblocking as well as mask your location online generally.

If you want to give it a try, head on over to the Private Internet Access website. I have also written a pretty detailed piece about how to get started here: How to get American Netflix in Canada with a VPN.

If you live outside of the US you probably know all too well the frustration of not being able to access some of the best video content on the web. SNL, Key and Peele, a boatload of US Netflix content, Hulu… It’s all locked away from the rest of the world. But there is a super easy way to get access to this content on Netflix, Hulu and pretty much any other site that uses geo-blocking.  The answer: A VPN, or virtual private network.

How to get American Netflix in Canada with a VPN

Basically a VPN just routes your internet traffic through another server that is located somewhere other than where you live. So you could install a VPN from the US and make websites like Netflix and Hulu think that you are accessing their site from the US.

Which VPN should I choose?

I have tried out several (both free and paid) and have been most happy with Private Internet Access. And if you do a quick search online you’ll see that a lot of users trust them with their data. They don’t keep any logs and have a stellar reputation and good customer service. And best of all, the service is VERY fast. You see, when you route your internet traffic through another server, there can sometimes be drops in speed.  But with Private Internet Access it really doesn’t slow down at all.  I can still consistently enjoy 1080p streaming with surround sound on Netflix without a hitch, all while enjoy that sweet sweet American Netflix content. It’s quite simply the best VPN service out there right now.

Wrap-up

So that’s it! Definitely consider signing up for Private Internet Access . It’s ease of use, reliability and speed are heads and shoulders above its competition. It just works. That’s why I have used it consistently for the past year and a half. Happy Netflixing!

I have used Private Internet Access for over a year now and absolutely love their service and would not be promoting it if I wasn’t totally happy with it.  If you have any questions please do send me an email.

Sick of not being able to watch the best content on Netflix, Hulu or another streaming video service? Well, you’re not alone. The truth is that services like Netflix have very different catalogs depending on where you live. Or in this case, where Netflix thinks you live. This article will tell you how to get American Netflix and Hulu in less than 2 minutes. And if you do live in the US, then this method will allow you to access UK, Japan, Canadian Netflix etc. You can achieve this by using a great service called Unblock-Us.

Unlock American Netflix and Hulu now

First, check out MoreFlicks.com which can be used to show which content is available on which country’s Netflix. In the screenshot below you can see all of the different regions that are available.  And believe me, there is very different content in each. Canada tends to have a less than stellar catalog when compared to American Netflix. Japan, as you might guess, has a lot more Anime content. It will also

There is a better way…

How to get American Netflix and Hulu (and much more…)

This method will actually allow you to access any geo-blocked US streaming service including:

  • Netflix
  • Hulu
  • HBO Now
  • MLB TV
  • Pandora
  • Spotify
  • NHL Gamecenter Live
  • NBA League Pass
  • and more…

This method uses a really great service called Unblock-Us . I’ve used them for years. I have used it for years to get different Netflix regions, access to Hulu in Canada as well as get access to SNL episodes (which for some god awful reason are next to impossible to find online outside of the US.

Unblock-Us is pretty simple actually.  It basically masks your computer’s DNS to tell Netflix of Hulu (or other service) that you are located somewhere else.  And it works really well!

How do I set it up?

The whole process is very simple. You first sign up for an account here. Once you have started a trial, Unblock-Us will give you access to some tutorials of how to use the service. If it’s just on your laptop that you need US Netflix access, then it is REALLY simple. You just activate the service through your web browser. If you want to give access to all of the devices on your home network then you can also setup the service at your router (which is a bit more complicated).

This is where you sign up for a free trial

So if you want better video streaming content, go on over to Unblock-Us and sign up for their 7 day trial. If you decide to stick with it, it is $4.99 a month (in Canada) which in my opinion is well worth it to not only get access to US Netflix, but also all kinds of other geoblocked content.

Happy cord cutting.

Please note that I do get a small commission if you click on the links above (at no cost to you). I do have extensive personal experience with Unblock-Us and I really do think it’s an awesome service. I wouldn’t be promoting it otherwise. If you have any questions just let me know.

The long wait is over. Finally Google has taken the covers off it’s brand new Chromecast device. And it’s about time. While the original Chromecast was indeed one of the best deals in streaming media players, there were still some features that kept some from taking the plunge.

Chromecast 2 VS Chromecast 1 – Review

The Design

The first thing you’ll notice about the Chromecast 2 (or “New Chromecast” as Google is insisting on calling it) is that it looks completely different. It has a more rounded puck shape than the previous one. Not only that, but the device uses an attached ribbon-style cord that is very flexible. This was added because some users simply could not fit the previous generation into the HDMI port on the back of their TV due to it being too deep and using an optional (but rigid) extension cord.  This was a great design choice, as now the Chromecast can easily hang off the HDMI port on the back of pretty much any TV.

Specifications

The under-the-hood improvements are both minimal and very useful. For some, they might not ever get the benefit of what Google has added, but for others it might be the selling point that will push them over the edge.  The two major updates are the addition of wireless 802.11 ac and the use of the wireless 5Ghz band. The AC addition will surely increase the speed of streams on networks that have wireless AC routers. The 5Ghz addition is actually the piece I was most excited for. I live in an apartment building, so there are many many wireless devices interfering with one another all the time (mostly on the crowded 2.4 Ghz band). So being able to keep the Chromecast off that congested piece of wireless real estate is a great thing, especially when I am feeding 1080p streams via Plex over my network.

Google has also announced a pretty insane sounding feature which I was unable to test yet. It’s called “Fast Play” and the gist of it is that it is a way for the Chromecast to intelligently load content before you even choose to watch it.  For example, as soon as you open the Netflix app, it will start loading small piece of the beginning of shows that you are likely to watch, based on a viewership algorithm built into the app. Pretty crazy stuff, and potentially really useful to make the Chromecast launch a video almost instantaneously. The future is now!

Setup and App

The setup process has been left largely unchanged from the original Chromecast (see the video review here) . The one major addition is that the Chromecast App has received a major face lift. It now is much more than simply an app to setup your device and then never open again. It now sports a tab that allows you to browse apps from the Google Play Store that are built with Chromecast functionality. It is this smart curation that was sorely missing in the previous generation.

The new Chromecast App

Speed Test

As seen in the video review, the speed different in loading up The Dark Knight from Netflix was negligible between the Chromecast 1 and Chromecast 2. This is a bit of a disappointment as I thought there would be a huge difference. However, this was far from a scientific experiment so the Chromecast 2 still may have some extra horsepower that will push it faster (I just didn’t see it on my local network).

Final Verdict

Get it! Even if you have the original, this thing is $35. And for the addition of the 5Ghz and wireless ac as well as the new (more flexible) design you really can’t go wrong here. If your router is old and doesn’t support either of these new standards, then you may want to wait to purchase. If you’ve been holding off because the original Chromecast just didn’t fit behind your TV, then chances are you are in luck. Get ready to do some serious casting.

Be sure to watch the video review here.
