I’m a Canadian. Which means that my Netflix looks like a barren wasteland compared to our friends south of the border. Canadians have been suffering through geo-blocked content ever since video streaming was even a thing. But fear not, there is a way to watch American Netflix here in Canada (or anywhere else in the world for that matter). And it’s 100% legal.
This method will actually allow you to access any geo-blocked US streaming service including:
- Netflix
- Hulu
- HBO Now
- MLB TV
- PBS
- VUDU
- Pandora
- WWE
- Spotify
- and more…
How to watch American Netflix
This method uses a really great service called Unblock-Us . I’ve used them for years. For me it was actually to get around sports blackouts with my NHL Gamecenter Live. But it also gave me access to some sweet sweet American Netflix. Oh, and you know how every episode of SNL online is not available to Canadians? Well it fixed that too.
Unblock-Us is super simple to setup and it basically makes it look like your computer (or other device) is accessing content for the US (or the UK if you so choose). For those technical folks out there, this is not a VPN (Virtual Private Network), it is actually just a way to change your DNS.
How do I set it up?
It’s really straight forward. You first sign up for an account here. Once you have started a trial, Unblock-Us will give you access to some tutorials of how to use the service. If it’s just on your laptop that you need US Netflix access, then it is REALLY simple. You just activate the service through your web browser. If you want to give access to all of the devices on your home network then it is slightly more complicated (but still relatively easy). Unblock-Us give you all off the tutorials to get it done.
When I did this over 4 years ago, I had my router setup to unlock all geo-blocked content. In the end my Xbox, phone, tablet and computer all had access to US-only streaming services.
